#23 Week 9: final posting

Wow! I have finally completed all the discovery exercises.

If you are a great computer fan, you will find it very interesting during the discovery tour. Otherwise, you really need to struggle to complete the exercises. In either case, you did learn a lot as you can keep yourself updated with the cyber world.

#22 Week 9 'e-book'

I have just gone through the discovery exercise. I notice that the e-books offered by the free site do not cover current bestseller! It may be due to copyright or other issues. Yet they are still worth to read as the list of e-books are of high quality. The search criteria can still be considered to be quite user-friendly. Yet you really need broadband facility to ensure a speedy download as well as to make sure that your computer or other electronic devices are well equipped.

I have downloaded my favorite book 'A tale of two cities' by Charles Dickens. It only took less than a minute to finish the download in plain text. 'Zip' option is also provided. Audio book format is available for this title as well. Just see below for details for the plain text download.

End of the Project Gutenberg EBook of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens*** END OF THIS PROJECT GUTENBERG EBOOK A TALE OF TWO CITIES ******** This file should be named 98.txt or 98.zip *****This and all associated files of various formats will be found in: http://www.gutenberg.net/9/98/

#17 Week 7 Social Networking

It is amazing to see the 'communication' power in the cyber world. We can say that they are both inclusive and exclusive. Whoever has signed up in such websites can make their site accessible only to their friends or the friends of their friends. You can make yourself very visible by sharing with others what is happening. Or, you can express yourself freely with photos and video. Very dynamic and interesting.

Librarything #7

I now have my 'own library' after signing up with the librarything and added some new books in it. The book shelf there has only covered a few of my recent readings. That's why it does not look so impressed. The following are the links to my 'own library'.

#4-5 Week 2

Hi there,

This is a post entry as i have aleady signed up for the bloglines sometimes ago. Yet only until then I made my blog public.

I also have added some news feeds to my blog.
http://www.bloglines.com/blog/miaochai@gmail.com

http://www.bloglines.com/public/miaochai@gmail.com

I have subscribed some news feeds by browsing the http://www.thepaperboy.com/ to make the selection. I also have subscribed some library related blogs and some of my colleagues' blogs. It is both interesting and informative to view these blogs.

I can go straight to the library related blogs to read the latest news or development in the library field. I also can read headlines around the world from the news feeds. Just keep me updated what is happening in the field of my job as well as on that planet. Very 'career orientated' and 'globalised'!

#21 Week 9

Hi there,

Today I just added the RSS feed for the podcast of the Library Channel to my bloglines account when I looked up one of the podcast directories, the Podcast.com. http://podcast.com/show/53155/The-Library-Channel-Podcasts/

I first did a keyword search with 'library' and found such podcast. Then I have a good look (or listening) to one of the episodes of this podcast about what would happen in March in the library of Arizona State University. This podcast also introduced the library service to the university faculty, students and teachers. Feedback is also welcome as announced by the podcast. It will be very interesting if our library also do the same to inform our customers of our services and events to be held.

Week 9 #20 YouTube

Hi there,

I just downloaded the 'Library Card Sign Up Month' video to my computer. The animation and the 'funny' voices of the characters in the video are very appealing to children, which may encourage them to sign up for a library card. I found such video worth adding as an entry in my blog because it is library related and it can give me some ideas to promote library membership.

I also copied and pasted the video to my e-mail account for future reference.

The web-based features are so user-friendly that i don't need to worry about where to save my document,i.e. no specific PC or USB is required. It is easy to sign up and no worry for any installation of relevant software. Cool!!

#19 Web 2.0 awards list

My favorite one is the librarything website. Amazing! It is very user friendly and you can interact with other book lovers by sharing with them your book review, ratings and comments of your favourite books. It is not only about social networking, but also to enrich your knowledge about books by viewing what is the 'great read' of others.

#16 thoughts about Web 2.0 (Week 6 completed)

Libraries and their users can interact through Web 2.0, which provides so many features, e.g. social networks, tagging and wikis. It helps libraries to provide better access to their collection and gain user support/feedback in a dynamic background. In light of changes in the community, libraries not only have to change but also allow users to change them through their presence and involvement in the Web 2.0 technology. Such innovation can help libraries manage and adapt themselves to changes.
